How Did Spot Rank General Liability Providers for Small Businesses?

Spot lists a provider only when its published General Liability Insurance information includes a documented claim (verified or company-reported) about eligibility, role, coverage or application that mentions small businesses. “Named for Small Businesses” marks a provider’s own statement of who it serves; “Related mention” marks a role, coverage or application claim.

Providers with both a Reliability Score and a Review Score rank first, then providers with one of the two, then providers with neither. Within each group the order is the equal-weight average of the scores the provider has, as in the industry guides; ties break on fit, then the number of documented claims, then name.

The Reliability Score comes from Spot’s reliability assessments and the Review Score from the provider’s rated review sources. Neither measures whether a policy fits your business or what it costs. How Reliability Scores work.

What Do Small Businesses Need From General Liability Insurance?

The first request usually comes from outside. One insurer says general liability is typically the first policy small business owners buy and is often required by landlords and clients, and another lists a landlord, customer or marketplace asking for a certificate among the moments it comes up. Those are insurers describing their own market. Your lease and client contracts set what you must carry.1,4

Know where it fits. The Insurance Information Institute says most small businesses need at least four types of insurance: property, liability, business auto and workers' compensation. General liability falls under liability, and the ISO form marks where it stops: it excludes workers' compensation obligations and injuries to your employees, property you own, rent or occupy, and autos you own, operate, rent or borrow.2,3

Whether it is mandatory can depend on your trade. One insurer says it is especially important for small businesses that are legally required or mandated by industry regulators to carry it. Check your licensing body before you assume it applies to you.6

Which General Liability Exposures Do Small Businesses Face?

A customer's injury can be paid without a lawsuit. In the ISO form, Coverage C pays medical expenses for bodily injury caused by an accident on premises you own or rent, on the ways next to them, or because of your operations, regardless of fault. The expenses must be incurred and reported within one year, the injured person must submit to examination by physicians the insurer chooses, and a separate per-person Medical Expense Limit applies, with payments counting toward the general aggregate.3

Your lease can add liability. In the ISO form, a contract for a lease of premises counts as an "insured contract", so liability you assume as a tenant for injury or damage to others can be covered. Fire damage to the rented premises is carved out of that treatment and sits under its own Damage To Premises Rented To You Limit.3

Your own stock, equipment and fixtures are not insured under it. The form excludes property you own, rent or occupy, so a fire that destroys them is a property claim. California's insurance department describes a business owner's policy as merging property, general liability and business interruption for small businesses.3,7

What Should Small Businesses Check Before Buying General Liability Insurance?

Compare a standalone policy with a bundle. One insurer says you can buy general liability on its own, but the easiest way is a business owner's policy, which bundles commercial property and business income insurance with it. The Insurance Information Institute says that kind of policy is designed for small and medium-sized businesses and that the type of business can influence eligibility, so ask each insurer for its criteria.5,8

Ask which exposure base prices your policy. California's insurance department says general liability premiums depend on square footage, payroll or gross sales, depending on the classification code, and that premium is rate multiplied by exposure. Ask which base and which class apply to you, then give the insurer figures you can support.7

Read your lease against the rented-premises limit. Ask for the Damage To Premises Rented To You Limit in writing and compare it with what the lease says you must insure, since that limit caps what the form pays for fire damage to premises you rent. If you can't find the number on the quote, ask for it before you bind.3

What Do Small Businesses Ask About General Liability Insurance?

Do Small Businesses Need General Liability Insurance?

Often because a landlord or client asks. One insurer says it is often required by landlords and clients, another says it may not be required by law, and a third says some small businesses are required by industry regulators. Check your lease, your contracts and your licensing body.1,5,6

What Does General Liability Insurance Not Cover for Small Businesses?

Under the ISO form, it does not pay workers' compensation obligations or injuries to your employees, property you own, rent or occupy, or autos you own or operate. Those usually sit under workers' compensation, property and commercial auto policies.2,3

Should Small Businesses Buy General Liability Alone or in a BOP?

A bundle can be simpler. One insurer says a business owner's policy is the easiest way to get general liability and adds commercial property and business income cover. Bundles are meant for smaller businesses and some types of business may be ineligible, so ask each insurer for its eligibility criteria.5,8
