Crime insurance in Maryland: match transfer and check risks to the policy
Start with the losses your business could not absorb: employee theft of money or property, forged checks, cash in transit, and a vendor or executive impersonation that redirects a wire. In Maryland, a bank's recovery rules for an unauthorized funds transfer are separate from your crime policy's notice and proof-of-loss terms. If a transfer is redirected, contact the bank immediately, preserve the message and approval records, and report the loss under the policy's actual wording.
What Is Crime Insurance?
Crime insurance can help reimburse specified business losses from theft and fraud, including employee theft and forgery. Compare those protections separately and ask whether a payment sent after an impersonation scam is covered. Read the national Crime guide.
What Should You Watch for With Crime Insurance in Maryland?
Keep bank and insurer notice clocks separate
Maryland Commercial Law §4A-204 says a customer who does not use ordinary care to identify an unauthorized payment order and notify the bank within a reasonable time, capped at 90 days after bank notice, loses interest on the refund; the bank does not gain a right to recover from the customer solely because notice was late. That bank rule does not set your insurer's discovery, notice, or proof-of-loss deadlines. Ask for those policy dates and report suspected crime promptly. 1,3
Read the bank's actual transfer-security agreement
Maryland §4A-201 defines a security procedure as one established by agreement between the customer and receiving bank to verify payment orders or detect errors. Signature comparison alone is not a security procedure under the section. Keep the signed bank agreement and ask the broker what the proposed policy says about social-engineering or fraudulent-instruction losses; the bank statute does not establish insurance coverage. 2
Compare limits for the loss you expect
Ask the broker to show the policy's employee-dishonesty, forged-instrument, funds-transfer, social-engineering, money-and-securities, and property-in-transit terms side by side, including any sublimit, retention, discovery period, and notice condition. A redirected vendor wire and an employee taking company funds may be treated under different insuring agreements. 3
Which Crime Insurance Providers Have Maryland License Records?
These providers publish a national listing for Crime; the state records document licenses for the entities and roles shown below. Some records rely on company-reported information rather than independent regulator verification. A national listing does not confirm the product is available in Maryland. Check the regulator’s license lookup and confirm state availability for your business when requesting a quote.
Coalition
Coalition Insurance Solutions, Inc.
Coalition’s license page lists producer and surplus-lines licenses for Coalition Insurance Solutions, Inc. in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The page separately lists insurers; this record covers the brokerage entity only. 10
Coalition offers crime insurance through its executive-risks product for private and nonprofit US organizations.
Corgi
Corgi Insurance Services, Inc.
Corgi’s company producer-license table lists 50 jurisdictions: 49 states and the District of Columbia, including DC license 3003091619. New Mexico does not appear in the table and is not included here; the omission does not establish that Corgi is unlicensed there. The company-reported table has no stated as-of date and does not establish product availability. 11
Corgi lists crime insurance among its main policies.
Vouch
Vouch Specialty Insurance Services, LLC
Vouch’s licenses page, effective January 16, 2025, lists producer licenses in all 50 states and DC. Its separate surplus-lines table includes Idaho number 870820, while a footnote says Georgia and Idaho do not issue agency-level surplus-lines licenses. Because those statements conflict for Idaho, this record keeps Idaho producer-only and does not treat the table number as established agency surplus-lines authority. The page is company-reported and does not establish product availability. 15
As of September 16, 2026, Vouch lists crime among the coverages in its technology-company programs.

Surplus-Lines Tax and Stamping Office in Maryland
Reported tax rate. 3% of gross premiums less returned premiums when Maryland is the insured's home state; excludes risks of Maryland and its political subdivisions 7,8
When Maryland is the insured's home state, the tax is 3% of gross premiums less returned premiums, except insurance of risks of the State or a political subdivision. For policies effective on or after July 21, 2011, Maryland taxes the entire premium and the broker must charge the tax in addition to premium. Maryland's property and casualty guaranty corporation excludes surplus-lines policies.
What Should You Ask Before Buying Crime Insurance in Maryland?
- Does the employee-dishonesty grant cover theft of both money and other business property, and how does the policy define an employee, temporary worker, leased worker, or independent contractor?
- Which insuring agreement and sublimit apply when a real vendor's email account is compromised and your employee sends a wire to changed bank details?
- What are the policy's discovery, notice, proof-of-loss, and cooperation deadlines, and when does each clock start?
- Are employee theft, forged checks, cash off premises or in transit, computer fraud, and fraudulent funds-transfer losses subject to separate limits or retentions?
- What records should you preserve after suspected fraud, and who must receive notice?
Crime Insurance in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Maryland's 90-day funds-transfer rule give me 90 days to report a crime-insurance claim?
No. Section 4A-204 concerns a customer's notice to its receiving bank about an unauthorized payment order and the customer's interest on a refund. It does not state the deadline under a crime policy. Check the policy and notify the insurer or broker promptly. 1
Does the bank's security procedure determine whether a redirected wire is insured?
No. Maryland's funds-transfer statute addresses the customer-bank relationship. Whether a loss fits a crime-policy grant, exclusion, limit, or condition depends on the issued policy wording and the facts. 2
