Using AI and Selling AI Are Different Underwriting Questions
Founder Shield’s product page addresses US AI users and excludes standard cyberattacks and intentional misuse as well as AI sellers. Relm separates developer liability from PONTAAI’s liability-gap structure and RESCAAI’s first-party third-party-AI losses. A mixed-use business needs the underwriter to confirm how it classifies the entire operation; dividing activities in an application does not itself create eligibility. 14 34
Founder Shield’s broader brokerage catalogue and customization service remain distinct from that particular product’s restrictions. An AI seller excluded from the advertised Testudo placement is not thereby excluded from every policy Founder Shield could arrange. Ask what alternative it proposes and compare that named product with Relm. 11 12 14
Neither Underwriting Brand Identifies Every Risk Bearer
Founder Shield identifies Testudo in the AI placement chain. Testudo describes Lloyd’s-backed capacity and its US entity as an intermediary that does not bear the risk. Relm’s legal disclosures identify a Bermuda insurer and US producer/MGA, but do not identify the insurer for a California AI quote. Require the actual issuer or participating syndicates in each proposal. 16 17 30 31
There is also a version issue: Founder Shield’s page lists five AI coverage categories, while Testudo’s broker page lists six, including regulatory violations. Do not treat the sixth as automatically included. Compare regulatory-defense and damages language with Relm’s proposed form rather than transferring a feature between marketing pages. 14 15 35
Growing Into a New Business Model
Founder Shield asks clients to flag new products and business models for coverage review. That is especially relevant when an internal AI tool becomes a commercial product. Relm’s distinct audiences provide another reason to revisit the classification at that point. Neither description promises automatic protection when the business changes. 19 34
What Should You Confirm in Founder Shield and Relm Insurance Quotes?
- Obtain written eligibility for both internal AI use and product sales, including any change planned during the policy year. 14 35
- Resolve the five-versus-six agreement summaries, defense-cost treatment and reporting conditions against the offered policy. 15 14
- Identify Founder Shield’s contracting producer—the reviewed terms use two entity names—and each AI policy’s California placement route and risk bearer. 2 17 30
Founder Shield vs Relm Insurance Services Compared
What each provider documents about the services you may need
| Criteria | Founder Shield | Relm Insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Business role | Founder Shield helps businesses choose and arrange insurance with insurers; its terms say it does not insure risks or decide whether claims are covered. 1,2Company-reported. Brand’s documented intermediary role. No assertion of current state licensure or universal underwriting authority. Founder Shield is part of The Baldwin Group, which lists it among acquired firms; Founder Shield describes its role as the group’s innovation arm. 3,4Company-reported. Current brand relationship corroborated by the group’s own site. No claim about ultimate investors, public listing status or a current intermediary ownership chain. Confirm the producer for your account: Founder Shield’s terms identify The Baldwin Group Specialty Solutions, LLC, while its license disclosures identify Foundershield LLC. 2,24Not found in reviewed sources. The retained terms and licensing sources disclose those names separately. They do not establish a subsidiary relationship, merger, successor relationship or the producer for a particular account. If regulatory compliance matters to your selection, note that New York DFS fined Foundershield LLC $36,600 for late excess-line filings covering 2019–2023; the 2025 consent order concerns filing compliance, not claims payment. 24Verified. August 21, 2025 disciplinary notice, PDF page 6, visually checked against the original. Does not establish current license status, remediation, policy invalidity or a pattern of claims conduct. | AI and emerging-industry buyers can approach Relm for specialty insurance, but its Bermuda insurer and US distributor perform different roles. 29,31,30Company-reported. Brand-level introduction; company descriptions, not an independent regulatory finding. Check who will sell and issue your policy: Relm Insurance Ltd. is Bermuda regulated; Relm US Insurance Solutions Inc. is a US producer and MGA. The Bermuda insurer says it works only through licensed brokers. 30,31Company-reported. Company legal disclosures and US launch announcement; authority and insurer vary by placement. No regulator license verification completed. |
| Customer focus | Venture-backed and high-growth businesses from early rounds through IPO can use Founder Shield’s industry practices in technology, life sciences, finance, retail and transportation. 1,6Company-reported. Stated customer focus, not an audited customer census or an eligibility guarantee. | AI developers, sellers and businesses deploying third-party AI can consider Relm’s products; public pages do not specify a minimum funding stage or revenue threshold. 34,35,37Company-reported. AI product audiences; no inference that all bootstrapped, pre-revenue or growth-stage companies qualify. |
| Access to insurers | Founder Shield advertises access to 200+ carriers, but that does not promise your account will receive 200 quotes; its broker says it first looks for markets willing to insure your industry and risk. 6,10Company-reported. Company network and selection claims. No complete roster, direct-appointment census, market submission log or competitive quote exercise obtained. Founder Shield says it works exclusively with AM Best A-rated carriers; verify the current rating of the insurer named on your specific policy. 10Company-reported. No financial-strength rating assigned to the broker, Testudo or an unnamed insurer. Ask for the exact issuing entity and verify the rating attached to that entity. Ask for the insurer or Lloyd’s syndicates on your quote: Founder Shield distributes the AI product and names Testudo as underwriter, while Testudo says its US entity places insurance without taking the risk. 14,16,17Company-reported. Product-specific company disclosures. Do not equate an underwriting intermediary with a risk-bearing insurer or assign this placement chain to other Founder Shield products. Regulatory approvals and ratings are not independently established. | Ask which insurer is named on your policy; Relm’s announcement names Trisura as fronting carrier for certain US digital-asset risks, not all products or California AI coverage. 38Company-reported. Historical company announcement inspected on research date; current product-specific contracting insurer must be obtained from quote/declarations. |
| Availability | Confirm state eligibility before applying because Founder Shield says some products are limited by jurisdiction, and Testudo describes its AI product as excess-and-surplus coverage not sold everywhere. 2,16Not found in reviewed sources. Company territorial qualifications; neither a producer license nor a website quote button establishes a particular insurer’s product availability. No nationwide authorization claim. Verify the producer’s current state license for your placement; reviewed sources do not establish a complete state list, and the 2025 disciplinary record does not establish present status. 25,24,26Not found in reviewed sources. The New York public entity search could not be completed. Baldwin’s reviewed California license page lists other entities and is not a substitute for a complete register. Absence of verification is not absence of a license. | California buyers should verify producer authority independently: Relm lists license 6013054 for Relm US Insurance Solutions Inc., but this company disclosure is not an independent license check or surplus-lines authorization. 30Company-reported. California row only; absence of a listed surplus-lines authority is not evidence that no lawful distribution route exists. Get written California terms before applying because reviewed pages do not establish the insurer, admitted status or broker route for NOVAAI, PONTAAI or RESCAAI. 30,31,34Not found in reviewed sources. Scoped unresolved California AI placement route, not a finding of unavailability. US marketing and producer licensing alone do not establish a particular policy route. |
| Servicing and renewals | For a contract certificate, email Founder Shield the other party’s legal name and address, required wording and the contract insurance clause so the team can assess endorsement needs. 18Company-reported. Company-described COI process. No certificate requested and no turnaround independently measured. A request is not confirmation that all requested wording is covered. Tell Founder Shield when products, business model, offices or territories change so it can review whether your coverage needs adjustment. 19Company-reported. Changes FAQ. Does not establish automatic increases in limits, approval of new activities or protection without a policy change. Start preparing for renewal 60–90 days before expiration with updated business information and claims history; Founder Shield calls this planning guidance, not a service deadline. 1,20Company-reported. Homepage platform description and January 2026 renewal guidance. No authenticated renewal tested, automatic renewal guarantee or fixed service-level agreement found. Check minimum-earned-premium terms before binding because some insurers keep part of the premium if you cancel early; Founder Shield directs cancellation requests to support. 2Company-reported. General cancellation description; refund amounts, financed balances and effective dates depend on the contract. | Agree on certificates, endorsements, renewal timing and service contacts with your broker before binding; reviewed pages do not describe a customer portal or these turnaround times. 39,41Not publicly disclosed. Public contact and website terms only; lack of described functions does not establish their absence. |
