SourceScoreWhat to Know
NerdWallet5.0/ 10

Original: 2.5 / 5

NerdWallet states that AIG sells policies through independent insurance agents and received more complaints about liability and property claims than expected for a company of its size. The page displays 2.5 stars as NerdWallet’s editorial rating. This negative comparison is retained; its underlying complaint population and observation period are not stated in the extracted passage.[1]

NerdWallet’s editorial business-insurance comparison; the AIG entry concerns commercial liability and property insurance, not a quantified policyholder-review sample. The page’s complaint statement and 2.5-star editorial rating are source-specific and must not be recast as a consumer average.

252 reviews

Trustpilot displays a 1.9/5 TrustScore from 252 reviews. Its displayed review distribution is predominantly one-star and includes both negative and positive accounts. The profile says reviews are individual consumer opinions and notes AIG has not recently invited reviews; do not use this as a commercial-insurance claims statistic.[2]

Consumer reviews on aig.com’s Trustpilot profile span products and countries, including personal, travel, device/service and other experiences; they do not isolate U.S. commercial-P&C policyholders or a single issuing insurer.

Excluded from Review Score: The ConsumerAffairs page is titled AIG Life Insurance Reviews and mixes life and high-net-worth home reviews. It is not about commercial insurance, so its 1.0 average should not feed the commercial review score.

ConsumerAffairs displays 1.0/5 from 274 reviews. This source-specific consumer average is included with its exact ConsumerAffairs page category and is not comparable to Trustpilot or NerdWallet’s editorial rating. Do not attribute the average to any one AIG insurer, commercial product, state, or claim outcome.[3]

AIG is named in the study’s targeted brand list, which establishes a relevant study population but not a score. No AIG result or numerical satisfaction metric is adopted here. Keep any eventual study metric separate from consumer reviews and Spot’s assessment.[4]

NerdWallet gives AIG 2.5 stars

NerdWallet's business insurance page says AIG sells through independent agents. It also says AIG drew more complaints than expected for a company its size, about liability and property claims. The 2.5 stars is NerdWallet's own editorial rating, not an average of customers.[1]

The page doesn't say how many complaints there were or over what period. Treat it as a warning to ask about claims, not a measured claims rate.[1]

Trustpilot shows 1.9 from 252 reviews

Most of the reviews on AIG's Trustpilot page are one star, though some are positive. The page covers AIG's whole brand, including personal, travel and other products in several countries.[2]

Trustpilot also says AIG hasn't recently invited reviews. That means the reviews may come mostly from people with a complaint.[2]

BBB lists 270 complaints in three years

The Better Business Bureau profile for American International Group shows 270 complaints over the past three years. It covers all of AIG's U.S. offices, not just business insurance, and BBB says the complaints it shows may not be all of them.[6]

A complaint count isn't a complaint rate, so you can't tell how AIG compares with others of its size.[6]

What Did Spot Not Find for AIG?

J.D. Power's small-business study names AIG among the brands it looks at, but shows no AIG score. The state regulators' NAIC tool gave us no AIG complaint report either. That isn't the same as zero complaints.[4][5]

We also read a ConsumerAffairs page with a 1.0 from 274 reviews, but it is titled AIG Life Insurance and mixes life and home policies. We show it but don't count it.[3]

What Counts Toward the AIG Review Score?

AIG's Review Score is 4.4 out of 10, based on NerdWallet's 2.5 stars and Trustpilot's 1.9 out of 5. It leaves out the ConsumerAffairs page, since that one is about life insurance, and the BBB complaint count, since it isn't a star rating.[1][2][3][6]

Limitations of AIG Review Data

  • Trustpilot and BBB cover AIG as a whole, not just U.S. small-business insurance.
  • NerdWallet's 2.5 stars is an editorial rating with no review count behind it.
  • We found no AIG score from J.D. Power and no complaint report from the NAIC.
  • Different AIG insurance companies issue different policies, and no source splits the results by company.

What Should You Ask AIG Before You Buy?

  • Which AIG insurance company would issue my policy, and how has it handled claims like mine?
  • Who handles claims: AIG staff, a third party, or my agent?
  • How do you handle a dispute or a slow claim, and who do I contact?
  • Can you show me your complaint record with my state's insurance department?
