What Does Commercial Umbrella Insurance Cover?

Commercial umbrella coverage may pay a covered liability claim after a scheduled underlying policy reaches its limit.

It does not automatically cover cyber, D&O, or professional-liability claims. California’s regulator notes that an umbrella may also provide coverage for gaps or when a basic policy is not in force; that response may carry a self-insured retention.

This does not mean all claims or insurance lines are included. Triple-I notes that exclusions can apply to specialized exposures, and the schedule of underlying insurance and umbrella exclusions govern whether a particular claim is covered. Professional liability, cyber, and D&O should not be assumed to be included just because they are business liabilities.

Review attachment language, underlying limits, retention, aggregate treatment, defense provisions, exclusions, and any follow-form language. Ask the broker to map the actual umbrella wording against each liability policy you expect it to sit over.
