North Carolina inland marine insurance for bridges and transit property
North Carolina's marine-insurance kind includes property connected with navigation, transit, or transportation, including preparation for shipment and incidental delay, storage, and transshipment. Bridges, tunnels, and other instrumentalities of transportation are included unless fire, tornado, sprinkler leakage, hail, explosion, earthquake, riot, or civil commotion are the only hazards covered. A separate statute says inland marine includes insurance defined by statute or, if not, by the Commissioner's ruling or by general custom.
What Is Inland Marine Insurance?
If your business moves equipment between sites or ships goods, inland marine can cover those property exposures; installation and other forms address different property categories. Match the quote to what you own, rent or hold for others. Read the national Tools, equipment and inland marine guide.
What to Watch for With Inland Marine in North Carolina
A Bridge Floater Drops Out If Only Named Perils Are Covered
G.S. 58-7-15(20) includes bridges, tunnels, and other instrumentalities of transportation and communication, excluding buildings, their furniture and furnishings, fixed contents, and supplies held in storage, unless fire, tornado, sprinkler leakage, hail, explosion, earthquake, riot, and/or civil commotion are the only hazards covered. If your quote covers only those named perils, it is not in this marine clause. Ask which additional perils are actually insured. 1
Piers and Docks Use the Same Named-Peril Boundary
The same subdivision excludes piers, wharves, docks, and slips from the marine kind when those same perils are the only hazards covered. A waterfront contractor should not assume a pier is inland marine because it touches the water. Match the peril list on the form to this test. 1
Jewelry Does Not Have to Be in Transit
The marine kind also covers precious stones, jewels, jewelry, and precious metals whether or not they are in transportation, and it includes personal property floater risks and marine builder's risks. The automobile bodily-injury exclusion in subdivision (20)b is limited to that liability class. It is not a general ban on scheduling a contractor's mobile equipment. Describe highway trucks separately from tools. 1
If the Statute Is Silent, Custom or a Commissioner Ruling Fills In
G.S. 58-40-5(3) says inland marine insurance shall be deemed to include insurance defined by statute, or by interpretation, or if not so defined, by ruling of the Commissioner, or as established by general custom of the business. The nationwide-definition rule URL returned 404, so this guide does not quote that rule. Ask whether your class is one the Commissioner has ruled on. 2
Which Inland Marine Providers Have North Carolina License Records?
These providers publish a national listing for Tools, equipment and inland marine; the state records document licenses for the entities and roles shown below. Some records rely on company-reported information rather than independent regulator verification. A national listing does not confirm the product is available in North Carolina. Check the regulator’s license lookup and confirm state availability for your business when requesting a quote.

Specialty Program Group LLC
Insurance producer · checked 2026-09-28
TechInsurance’s current licensing page names Specialty Program Group LLC / SPG Insurance Solutions and lists state license numbers, but labels Rhode Island “Individual licenses” rather than identifying a license for the named agency. RI is omitted because this disclosure does not establish agency authority there; this is a search limitation, not an assertion that the company is unlicensed. The remaining state entries are company-reported and are not an insurance product availability map. 16
TechInsurance arranges inland marine coverage for contractors’ tools and equipment.

Surplus-Lines Tax and Stamping Office in North Carolina
Reported tax rate. 5% of gross premium, less return premium, plus 0.4% NC Stamping Office fee for ordinary filed placements 7,8,9,10
When North Carolina is the insured’s home state, surplus-lines tax is 5% of gross premium less return premium; ordinary broker-placed filings also carry a 0.4% stamping fee, while risk-purchasing-group and independent-procurement filings follow separate procedures. A diligent search is generally required; an exempt commercial purchaser may bypass it only after the broker discloses the admitted-market protection difference and receives the purchaser’s subsequent written request. The policy warns that the state guaranty or solvency fund will not pay surplus-lines losses.
