Layr vs
TechInsurance: How Do They Compare for Business Insurance?
You can't buy from Layr directly: it runs sales and service behind a participating broker, who stays your broker. TechInsurance takes one application from you and compares quotes, including a technology E&O and cyber bundle.
Introduction to the Layr vs TechInsurance Comparison
Say you run a small software firm and your broker offers a Layr-powered portal, while TechInsurance advertises tech E&O online. Layr's current product illustration lists general liability, commercial auto, property, workers' compensation, umbrella and cyber, but not technology E&O. TechInsurance sells tech E&O as a bundle of E&O and cyber liability and has a California quote route. 4 21 19 Choose Layr if you're happy with your current broker and want better certificate, payment and renewal handling; choose TechInsurance if you're a technology business that needs tech E&O quoted and has no broker you want to keep.

Keep Your Broker or Move the Account
With Layr, your brokerage stays broker of record and keeps its commissions while Layr handles sales, service and support. Layr says it can work with your broker's current insurers and reach others through wholesalers. So adopting Layr changes the tools and support staff, not necessarily who advises you. 2 6
TechInsurance is an agency run by Specialty Program Group. It offers a dedicated account manager and online certificates. Moving there means transferring the account, so ask whether it can keep your current insurer or program. 17 23 22
Technology E&O Is Clearer at TechInsurance
Layr's illustration doesn't prove every brokerage implementation offers each listed line. An older 2021 referral page mentions more products, including errors and omissions, but most of its product links now return errors, so don't rely on it. 13 7
TechInsurance gives you a direct entry point for tech E&O and cyber. Get actual proposals from both before treating a missing menu item as unavailable. 21
Renewals and What You Pay
Layr says its team gathers updates, negotiates renewals with underwriters, and alerts you 60 days out when information is needed. TechInsurance's pages don't state a renewal remarketing schedule, so ask who reshops your policy at renewal. 6 5 17
Layr's consumer disclosure says monthly credit-card payment can carry a finance fee of up to 20% of premium, which is costly; its broker FAQ describes a different arrangement, so ask which applies to you. TechInsurance links to SPG's disclosure of commissions and possible client fees. 6 8 24
What Should You Confirm in Layr and TechInsurance Quotes?
- Does Layr change your broker, service team or just the interface, and what would transfer to TechInsurance? 2 23
- Can each route quote technology E&O in your state, and which insurer issues the policy? 6 21
- Who handles certificates, underwriting handoffs and renewals, and what financing fee or compensation applies? 11 8 24
Layr vs TechInsurance Services Compared
What each provider documents about the services you may need
| Criteria | Layr | TechInsurance |
|---|---|---|
| Business role | Layr Holdings, Inc. operates withlayr.com and markets the Layr Apex platform and licensed support service. Public materials describe Layr handling sales, service and support while its brokerage customer keeps the broker-of-record relationship; they do not identify Layr as the insurer underwriting every policy. 9,1,2,5Company-reported. Entity and functional roles in current public materials. The precise producer role can depend on the partner arrangement and proposed policy. The reviewed sources identify Layr Holdings, Inc., its leaders and several investors, but do not disclose a current controlling parent or ownership percentages. 9,10,12Not found in reviewed sources. Current website operator and public ownership review. Investor participation is not treated as control, and no independence claim is made. Layr says a participating brokerage can offload small-business sales, service and support to Layr while retaining broker-of-record status and 100% of its commissions. 2,6Company-reported. Broker-facing Layr Apex arrangement as marketed publicly; actual allocation of duties and compensation depends on the brokerage agreement. | Small businesses can use TechInsurance to compare quotes and work with agents; it operates as an agency and brokerage. Its legal disclosure identifies it as a division of Specialty Program Group LLC, doing business in California as SPG Insurance Solutions. 17,23,24Company-reported. Brand and disclosed producer entity; company sources, not independent regulatory verification. TechInsurance describes itself as part of Insureon and HUB International. Its history says HUB acquired Insureon’s digital agency in 2022 while Bold Penguin acquired the technology platform; HUB’s acquisition announcement placed the agency operations within Specialty Program Group. 16,17,26Company-reported. Current company relationship descriptions plus historical acquisition announcement; does not make HUB or Bold Penguin the policy insurer. |
| Application process | Layr describes an online workflow in which a small-business owner assesses and selects coverage, pays, and then has the submission sent to underwriting. Current pages use different speed claims—10 minutes on New Business Capture and 12 minutes in a 2024 announcement—so neither figure establishes the time to receive or bind an actual quote. 4,11Conflicting sources. Company-described digital workflow. No form was completed and no quote, payment or underwriting decision was requested during research. | TechInsurance describes a single application for comparing multiple insurance quotes, followed by policy purchase and online coverage management, with licensed-agent guidance available. 16Company-reported. Public application description; no application submitted or quote obtained. TechInsurance’s account instructions warn that quotes may take time to appear after an application is submitted; an application is not confirmation of bound coverage. 17Company-reported. Public quote-account instructions; no universal turnaround time established. |
| Access to insurers | Layr says it works with major national insurers, accesses other markets through wholesalers and can use a brokerage customer's existing carriers. It does not publish a current legal-entity carrier panel or promise that every market will quote every account. 6Company-reported. Current broker FAQ; no carrier appointments, financial-strength ratings or account-specific market access independently verified. The reviewed current product, portal and FAQ pages do not identify the issuing insurer or policy form for each available product. Those details must come from the actual proposal and policy. 4,7,6Not publicly disclosed. Current platform and FAQ pages plus previously reviewed cyber product material. The dedicated cyber page is no longer available; that is not a finding that Layr lacks insurer relationships. | TechInsurance names insurance partners including The Hartford, Hiscox, Chubb and Travelers. These are examples of marketed relationships, not the identified contracting insurer for a quote; ask for the exact issuing entity and its California placement route. 22Company-reported. Partner names are commercial brands; no policy declarations or product-specific insurer allocation inspected. |
| Servicing and renewals | Layr markets a white-labeled portal with licensed support and broker dashboard updates for policies, renewals, claims and payments. A company release also describes policyholder access to documents, quotes, claims, certificates, bills and electronic payments. 5,12Company-reported. Company-described platform functions. No authenticated broker or policyholder account was accessed, and no service-time commitment was independently tested. Layr says its team gathers updates, negotiates renewal terms with underwriters and finalizes renewal documents. It describes automatic-renewal policies as hands-free and says customers whose policies need updated information are alerted 60 days before renewal. 6Company-reported. Current FAQ description. It does not state the notice needed to stop an automatic renewal or guarantee a renewal offer. | TechInsurance says it provides a dedicated account manager and online certificate access. Its instructions require an active policy for a certificate request and direct urgent requests to the account manager. 15,17Company-reported. Documented service description, not tested service speed or quality. The reviewed About and Contact pages do not establish a renewal remarketing schedule, a contractual response-time commitment, or the scope of dedicated support for a complex growth-stage insurance program. 16,17Not publicly disclosed. Scoped public-information gap; does not establish that these services are unavailable. |
| Fees and compensation | Layr's current broker FAQ says Layr receives a percentage of premium while the brokerage keeps 100% of commissions. A separate consumer-facing disclosure says carriers pay Layr a commission and businesses may pay a finance fee of up to 20% of premium. The pages do not reconcile which arrangement applies to a particular broker, policyholder or payment plan. 6,8Conflicting sources. Two public compensation descriptions for different apparent audiences. Actual agreements and itemized charges were not available. Layr's consumer-facing compensation disclosure says a business that uses its monthly credit-card payment arrangement can pay a percentage-based finance fee of up to 20% of premium. The page does not provide an account-specific rate, total repayment or cancellation terms. 8Company-reported. Public compensation disclosure; current applicability to every Layr Apex implementation or payment option is not established. | TechInsurance directs buyers to SPG’s compensation disclosure, which describes insurer commissions, contingent and supplemental payments, and possible negotiated client fees. Some placements may involve both commission and client-paid fees; quote-specific amounts are not disclosed there. 23,24Company-reported. Group disclosure expressly linked by TechInsurance; does not establish fees charged on a particular placement. SPG discloses that strategic insurers may pay enhanced compensation and that some of it may incentivize employees to prioritize those insurers’ products. Ask which markets were approached and how the placement is compensated. 24Company-reported. Group compensation policy linked by TechInsurance; no finding of unsuitable placement or actual employee incentives on a given account. |
