Is Counterpart Legit? Licensing, Carriers and Reliability

Counterpart has no Broker Reliability Score because the reviewed evidence is insufficient for a numerical assessment. Reliability Scores assess documented reliability within the reviewed scope; they do not predict claims payment.

What Our Research Found About Counterpart

Role: Broker. Scope: Limited to the U.S. producer and surplus-lines-broker role of Counterpart Insurance Services, Inc., the entity that Counterpart's own pages say offers its insurance. It does not assess Counterpart, Inc. as a contracting party or the financial strength of any insurer.

Who Counterpart is and what it is licensed to do

Counterpart says its policies are offered by Counterpart Insurance Services, Inc., a licensed insurance producer and surplus lines broker. Its license page reports a national producer number, 19374834, and licenses in all 50 states and D.C. Those numbers are Counterpart's own report.[1][4]

North Carolina's Secretary of State lists Counterpart Insurance Services, Inc. as an active company created on 21 September 2021, with an annual report filed on 3 March 2026. That confirms the company exists. It does not confirm an insurance license.[8]

The terms of service name a different company, Counterpart, Inc., as the party you contract with, and fees are paid to it. Counterpart says it sells only through licensed wholesale brokers, so a business normally reaches it through its own retail agent.[5][6]

Which insurers stand behind Counterpart's policies

Counterpart names three underwriters: Aspen Specialty Insurance Company, Evanston Insurance Company (a Markel company) and Westfield Specialty. Its license page lists the legal entities with NAIC numbers and states of domicile: Aspen Specialty 10717 (Texas), Evanston 35378 (Illinois), Westfield Specialty 16992 (Ohio), plus Westfield Insurance Company 24112 and Westfield Select 17105. Counterpart says Westfield Specialty writes its admitted management liability product, available in 35 states as of June 2024.[1][2][7][10]

An independent rating action confirms each insurer's strength. AM Best upgraded Aspen Specialty to A+ (Superior) on 4 September 2026. It affirmed Westfield Insurance Company and its affiliates at A (Excellent) in March 2025, and Evanston at A (Excellent) as part of the Markel North America group in November 2025. Counterpart's own pages still show A (XV) for all three as of February 2024, which is out of date for Aspen. These ratings belong to the insurers, not to Counterpart.[12][13][14][2]

Counterpart's site shows which insurer writes each product line only as a list, not product by product. Counterpart worked with Aspen on its professional liability product in 2022, and a trade article at the time said Counterpart is not a traditional MGA with delegated authority from Aspen. Counterpart's own press page says it raised $50 million in May 2026 partly to retain risk through Counterpart Insurance Company, which is not yet a confirmed policy issuer.[11][3]

Claims and what Counterpart tells buyers

Counterpart says it runs claims management in-house for its small-business customers, and a January 2024 announcement names Aspen and Markel as the carrier partners behind it. The company also says it closes claims twice as fast as the industry average and reports satisfaction figures. Those are company statements with no published method or sample.[4][9]

The license page says Counterpart may be paid by an insurer or other intermediary, that policy terms override website text, and that products vary by state. It does not say who decides a claim on a given policy. The terms of service require binding arbitration through the American Arbitration Association for disputes with Counterpart, Inc.[1][5]
