Does Cyber Insurance Cover Stolen Laptops?
Sometimes—cyber insurance may cover breach response if a stolen laptop exposes protected data, but device replacement usually falls under property coverage, if insured.
FTC guidance identifies data breaches and recovery of lost or stolen data among cyber coverage considerations. That does not mean a cyber form replaces commercial property or covers every physical loss. Encryption, access controls, and whether information was actually exposed may affect the incident facts and response duties.
Check cyber definitions for lost devices, unauthorized access, and protected information, plus notification and forensic expense limits. For the laptop replacement, review property coverage, off-premises limits, deductibles, and exclusions. If the device held regulated or customer data, follow the incident-response contact and notice requirements in the policy and assess whether legal notification rules apply.
