What Is Commercial Umbrella Insurance?
Commercial umbrella insurance adds liability limits above the policies listed in its schedule, such as general liability or auto.
The underlying policy and umbrella terms determine whether a particular claim reaches that extra limit. It lists commercial auto, general liability, and workers’ compensation among policies that may be covered. The Insurance Information Institute explains that the underlying policies and their limits are typically identified in the umbrella contract.
An umbrella is not a replacement for the underlying policies, and not every business liability exposure is automatically included. Some umbrella forms provide coverage only when a scheduled underlying policy responds; other wording may address certain gaps subject to a retention. Exclusions and attachment conditions vary.
Read the umbrella declarations and schedule of underlying insurance. Confirm each policy, insurer, limit, required renewal terms, exclusions, and whether the umbrella follows the underlying coverage or changes it.
