Does Business Interruption Cover Hurricanes?
Sometimes, if a covered hurricane peril damages insured property and triggers the income coverage.
Wind, flood, storm surge, and civil-authority restrictions may have separate exclusions, deductibles, or waiting periods. Business-income protection generally requires the underlying cause to be covered and may have waiting periods or special windstorm deductibles. Flood damage is commonly excluded from standard commercial property forms unless separately insured.
Check named-storm and wind deductibles, flood exclusions or separate flood coverage, business-income trigger, civil-authority terms, waiting period, and restoration period. Confirm the insured location and limits before hurricane season; a general business-interruption limit does not resolve whether the particular peril is covered.
Also distinguish damage to your building from an evacuation or access restriction: civil-authority coverage can have its own physical-damage, proximity, order, and time requirements. Save the declarations and endorsements showing separate wind and flood protection.
