Commercial Auto vs. Personal Auto: What Is the Difference?
Commercial auto covers business vehicles and work use; personal auto covers private use, subject to each policy’s terms.
Commercial auto is designed for business vehicles and work use; personal auto is designed for private use. Your policy’s insureds, vehicle list, and covered-auto symbols determine whether a work trip is covered. California’s commercial guide notes that business policies can assign coverage by vehicle and classify autos by weight and use. Personal auto terms may not cover every commercial activity or protect the business entity.
Neither label guarantees a particular outcome. A personal policy may allow limited work use; a commercial policy may omit a vehicle, driver, coverage type, or use unless included. A business auto policy may also use different limits and insured definitions.
Compare the named insureds, vehicle schedule, covered-auto symbols, liability limits, collision/comprehensive selections, exclusions, and rules for employees or personal use. Tell both insurers how each vehicle is actually used, and ask how an accident involving a work trip would be handled.
