Markel Insurance Company is a property and casualty insurer domiciled in Illinois, NAIC 38970, and it used to be called Insurance Company of Evanston. New York lists it as admitted since 1982 with 21 lines, and California lists its license as unlimited and normal since 1993. Markel says it is admitted in all 50 states, D.C. and Guam. ### Markel Insurance Financial strength

Nebraska's insurance department displays Markel Insurance Company's own annual-filing summary. For 2024 it shows assets of $5.9 billion, liabilities of $2.9 billion, policyholders' surplus of $2.98 billion, net income of $133 million and direct premiums written of $1.05 billion. Surplus was $1.93 billion in 2021. These are filing figures for this entity only. Markel says it works with program administrators and can offer quota-share and fronting arrangements, and its annual report counts $1.9 billion of fronting premium in 2025. The public pages do not name the reinsurers or partners behind any particular program, so no reinsurance panel is assessed. ### Markel Insurance Regulatory record

In July 2024, New York's Department of Financial Services signed consent order 2024-0168-S with Markel Insurance Group, LLC and several Markel insurers, including Markel Insurance Company. It found late reporting of new-business and other vehicle registration information to the state DMV for 2018. The penalty amount was not confirmed in the copy we read.
