# What Is an Insurance Producer License?

A producer license permits a person or firm to sell specified lines of insurance in a state; it does not make that seller the insurer.

A producer license is state permission to sell specified kinds of insurance. Check the license for the person or firm selling your policy; a nationwide ID helps find a record but does not prove the license is active. ## What Does an Insurance Producer License Allow?

A producer license identifies the lines of insurance the holder may sell, solicit or negotiate, such as life, property or casualty. Check the state record for the particular person or firm rather than relying on the brand name. [Producer Licensing Model Act (#218)](https://content.naic.org/sites/default/files/model-law-218.pdf), [Insurance License Types and Fees](https://oci.wi.gov/Pages/Agents/TypesOfLicenses.aspx)

In Wisconsin, that work is called intermediary activity, and brokers, agents, producers, and managing general agents all sit under that label. An optional firm license still does not give the corporation authority to act as an agent. [Insurance License Types and Fees](https://oci.wi.gov/Pages/Agents/TypesOfLicenses.aspx)

## What Does an Insurance Producer License Not Prove?

The NAIC Producer Licensing Model Act separates a producer license from authority to represent or commit an insurer. It is a model for state legislation; the applicable state law determines the requirements. [Producer Licensing Model Act (#218)](https://content.naic.org/sites/default/files/model-law-218.pdf)

A state license number is not an NPN. The NPN is a nationwide record key; the license number is the state's own credential. [Find an NPN](https://nipr.com/help/help-articles/find-a-national-producer-number-npn-)

## What Should You Confirm About an Insurance Producer License?

Look up the named person or firm, the state, the lines, status and dates, and any appointment that state uses. A producer license is not proof that the brand underwrites the policy.
