# Do Contractors Need Commercial Auto Insurance?

Contractors transporting crews, tools, or materials between jobs should consider commercial auto; equipment or cargo may need separate coverage.

Personal auto may not fit company-owned vehicles or regular work use, and tools in transit may need separate coverage. California guidance says business auto coverage can be selected for business, hired, or non-owned autos and that vehicles can have separate coverage selections. Tools or materials in transit may need inland marine or cargo coverage rather than auto physical damage.

A sole proprietor using a personal pickup for occasional visits may have a different policy need than a firm with titled trucks, trailers, employee drivers, or regular hauling. The vehicle’s weight, use, territory, and what is being transported can affect classification and eligibility.

Give the broker a list of vehicles, trailers, drivers, garaging locations, annual mileage, and operations. Check covered-auto symbols, liability limits, physical damage, hired/non-owned coverage, tools-in-transit protection, and contract-required insurance terms before work begins.
